Idaho Press Tribune: Describe your business and the products/services you offer:
Simply put, we sell Motor Scooters, so actually we are selling “Fun” and “Economy”!! Our scooters start at under $1200 so we have great choices for everybody. They are fully street legal so you can take them anywhere.
IPT: How does your business differ from others in the same market?
The difference is that all we specialize in Scooters. We have a variety of models, colors, sizes and price ranges. Yes, you will find an ATV or two and maybe a sand buggy mixed in but scooters are our main business. The others in our market only sell scooters as a side line.
IPT: Who is your average customer?
So far, there has been nothing average about our customers. Our RVer’s of all ages love them for scooting around the parks and campgrounds. The baby boomers like the nostalgia of them. The teenagers like them because they are just “Cool”. Everybody likes the fact that the scooters are inexpensive to buy and get 80 to 100 MPG.
IPT: Are you facing increased competition from national chains or the global marketplace, and how are you adapting?
We have not run into the problem as of yet. We do face some competition from the internet, but have found that most people use the internet for research and don’t really purchase items like these without being able to see, feel and touch them.
IPT: What are your responsibilities?
Since we work as a team, we share all the responsibilities of sales and marketing, advertising, bookkeeping and customer relations. We also share the really tough jobs like putting a few break-in miles on the scooters. If you come by your liable to catch us in the parking lot taking a few laps.
IPT: What got you interested in this business?
We have always enjoyed motorcycles so when the gas prices started tipping over $2.00 per gallon, we decided we needed something really economical to drive to town. We started looking around the valley for a motor scooter. We found that there were only a few choices, so we started researching other markets. That’s when we decided that The Treasure Valley needed more choices in scooters and a lesser price. So here we are with “Scooterville”.
IPT: What is your business philosophy?
Now that we’re a little older our philosophy has changed on just about everything. With this business one of our first objectives is to have fun and take the time to enjoy all the new experiences that come along with the scooters.
IPT: What is the biggest problem you faced and how did you overcome it?
When doing the research for which brand of scooters that we wanted to sell, we thought we were going crazy. So many models looked almost exactly the same. Well, we eventually found out that all the body molds were the same, they were just assembled by different factories. With our sanity regained, we moved on to all the other parts. Again, we found that they are all made the same and shipped to different assembly plants. So, which ones were the best for the best price? We kept narrowing it down and with a lot of patience came to our conclusions. We are very happy with our choices.
IPT: What is your greatest success?
Locating our new scooter business in Middleton. Everyone has been very supportive and tells us “We’re glad to have you here”. That kind of response from the local people really helps to confirm your decision about your new venture.
IPT: Who is your role model?
We have been blessed with the opportunity of having many family members and friends that have morally supported us and gracefully given us excellent advice. Each one of them is a role model to us.
IPT: What lesson would you like to share with others?
If you have an idea you can make it a reality. Sometimes it takes longer than you would like it to, but stay with it.
IPT: Anything else?
Please don’t mind if we take our time with our customers and get to know you a little bit. Like we said, this is fun!!
